Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink, and celebration. The holiday is based on a blend of Spanish culture, Mesoamerican ritual, and European religion. It is celebrated each year from October 31-November 2, but November 2nd is All Souls Day or Day of the Dead. According to tradition on the Day of the Dead, the gates of heaven are opened for spirits to rejoin their families for 24 hours.
The third annual Dia de los Muertos Community Celebration in downtown Decatur will continue the tradition of featuring a Community Ofrenda on the steps of the Alabama Center for the Arts Performing Arts building. Everyone is encouraged to participate by bring photographs of deceased loved ones. The Ofrenda is a beautiful tradition of Dia de los Muertos that serves as a heartfelt way to remember and honor deceased loved ones, bridging the gap between the living and the departed through offerings of food, marigold flowers, and cherished mementos.
Join us on November 2nd in downtown Decatur on 2nd Avenue at the ACA and beyond to participate in this incredible tradition and enjoy the Dia de los Muertos Youth Art Show in ACA’s Visual arts building and area schools’ Ofrendas in the lobby of the Performing Arts building.
There will also be a DJ, vendors, lunch specials at area restaurants, a live band, dancers, food trucks and more during this street festival!

11am-1pm – Lunch Specials at downtown restaurants
2-3pm – Quinceanera Lead Out (ACA Steps of Performing Arts bldg.)
4pm – Cumbia Social (Free Dance Lesson & Social at ACA Steps)
5-9pm – Food Trucks
5pm – Band begins
5-7pm – Carnegie Visual Arts Center Art Activities at ACA
6pm – Cultural Dancers
7:30pm – High School Dance Competition in front of Princess Theatre
9pm – Event ends
